Isaiah 2 and Passive Resistance in Aotearoa New Zealand

The Mountain of the Lord
1The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

How has passive resistance been practiced in Aotearoa New Zealand?

What is Parihaka like today?

How might we raise New Zealanders' awareness of the history of Parihaka?

We will discuss the message of Isaiah 2:1-5 and how this is connected to Parihaka.

Your task today is to share your learning with others. Choose from one of the following options. Whichever option you use, you must use at least three Te Reo words in your presentation.

1. Write a prayer for peace, which refers to Parihaka. Publish your prayer, so it can be displayed on our prayer wall in our new space.

2. Prepare a short (1-2 minute) speech. You do not need to write the speech word-for-word, but you must think about structure and put key points on cue cards.

3. Create an A4 poster sharing key facts. Carefully consider how the information is visually communicated.

4. Write a persuasive piece, arguing for a day of remembrance, or some other way of raising awareness of Parihaka.
