South Auckland's Te Puea Marae to stop taking in homeless

An Auckland marae will close its doors to homeless families at the end of July, saying the worst of the winter rush is now over.

Te Puea Memorial Marae in Mangere Bridge, south Auckland, started accommodating families on May 25 and has since seen about 56 families come through its doors.

The marae's Manaaki Tangata programme provided people with food, shelter, basic sanitation and help to get into permanent housing.

A Givealittle page dedicated to the initiative raised more than $90,000 in donations, with excess funds going towards building maintenance.
"While we have opened our doors, our kaimahi (workers/volunteers) are working hard to help them get into warm homes, along with kai (food) and basic necessities to help get them on their feet," the page reported.

Marae chairman Hurimoana Dennis told NZME 16 families had been placed in permanent housing and 13 in temporary housing.

Eight were asked to leave because they were not following the protocols of the marae and 19 people were still on site.

The remaining 13 came and went or "just needed advice", he said.

"We think the tidal wave has subsided. The tidal wave I'm talking about are the mums and dads and kids, because they all came. They just bowled us right over."

In a similar initiative, Manurewa Marae has also opened its doors to Auckland's homeless.

Board member Rangi McLean said supporting Te Puea by taking on overflow during the busier times was a no-brainer.

"We'll see how they can be transferred here. Our priority is to help Te Puea with their homeless whanau."

    3. Helpful: Because the marae helped the people who needed food and shelter. They helped them look for a home to live in and let them stay in the marae for the cold winter.

Loving: Because the marae were loving to the people who were homeless by welcoming them in to their marae.

      Sad,kind & welcoming.

  2. There are several habits of mind at play in this article. Name four and explain two. Remember, an explanation requires 'how' or 'why'. How is the habit of mind displayed in the situation? You will need at least one example.

Thinking flexibly, the Marae had to think of a way to keep all the homeless people under shelter and have them fed with the limited resources they had-Gabrielle

  4. Why did the marae decide to allow homeless people inside? Why have they recently decided to move them out again?

    2. They decided to let them in because they were homeless and because they had somewhere for them to stay. Since winter is nearly over and the temperature is getting warmer they decided that it was time to let the homeless go out and try and find a home and job because now they don't have to worry about getting cold and getting frost bite- Izzy, Gabrielle & William.

    3. Well done for answering both parts of the question. A bit more detail would be even better, for example, 'They might have felt winter was the most important time to help because it's so cold to sleep in a car our outside during the winter months.'

    4. I think that they let them in because they're nice people who are thinking about others.I think they move homeless out because maybe they were running out of money and not enough room.

    7. I think they were out of money and that they let them in because
it was winter and it was cold and wet and it was the coldies part of the year and we are getting warmer and it is not raining
and they were not that much room in there for them at all.

  5. Do you agree with the decision of the marae to no longer host the homeless people? Should they allow homeless people in all the time, never, or some arrangement in between? Discuss. Remember, a discussion requires your own opinion, supported by facts, in this case, examples from the text.

    1. We agree with the decision because they can't just rely on the marae for everything. But the marae could still provide food, help get into homes, help find jobs, provide them with basic needs and the facilities (bathroom) as they already are doing. But only provide shelter in the the colder times, eg. Winter/June/July. Lucy & Caitlyn

    2. We think that it is alright that the families that weren't respecting the marae and its protocols weren' aloud to stay there because they were lucky to be aloud there in the first place. We don't agree that they should stop letting the homeless that do respect the marae live there for a while because it was a great place to have the homeless living for a bit and also it was good that they found some of them homes. It is nice that they let the homeless stay there at winter but it would not be fun to sleep on the bench at any time of year.- Amy and Mitchell

    3. Good detail Lucy and Caitlyn. It sounds like you're suggesting that they do their best to help, while not making people too dependent on them.

    4. Well done Amy and Mitchell. I agree that if people are allowed to be guests there, they should be respectful and follow protocol.

    5. Yes, we agree with the marae's decision to stop hosting homeless people, the decision is totally up to them and they know that they have made the right choice for everybody.
The homeless were lucky that during the cold times of winter the marae kept their doors open.
I think that in the future the marae could make an arrangement for temporary homing, for those that are in immediate need for shelter and food.
If we were the people that set up the whole operation, we would be pretty proud of ourselves for how many people we had helped stay warm and feed.
