Tuktuku Inspired Art

Ben noticed how this piece of artwork at Waltham Pool draws on tuktuku patterns. It looks like double poutama with niho taniwha in the middle.

Based on our learning about tukutuku panels, we generated ideas for a piece of artwork at the entrance to Waka Hourua. Our purpose is to illustrate the whakataukī, 'He moana pukepuke ka ekengia e te waka,' and convey our Waka Hourua values.

One of our ideas was "[the] poutama panel could be quite good for one of the panels because it means striving ever upwards. It relates to Waka Hourua because we are always improving in our learning." - Sorell. We also thought the poutama steps reminded us of ocean waves.

Our contemporary colours show the open sea and sky. We are recycling plastic bags for the weaving to help care for the environment.
