Gavin Bishop's Toroa Visit

Gavin spoke to us about his new book, Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story.

The first page has illustrations of pterodactyls, a hint that the book begins in pre-historic times.

He let us know that he had one year to make a 64-page picture book about New Zealand for 9-year olds.

His book begins in the time of Gondwanaland and shares history all the way until today.

We learned that the early explorers came with 40km of rope!

Gavin explained that he created the artwork and wrote the text separately. The text was then placed digitally on the page to fit around the images.

The book includes many Māori elements, such as the story of Ranginui and Papatuanuku.

Gavin was kind enough to sign books for us.
