Problem Solving in Toroa

Today in Toroa we practised problem solving in the teams we chose. The Pickle Power team and Rainbow unicorns came out on top. Our focus was communicating calmly. This means not shouting, encouraging one another, and asking quality questions instead of feeling rushed and getting too stressed.

Our theme for today was matchstick puzzles. The first one was easy, but almost all of us got stuck on the second one. This was the puzzle we found tricky:

Successful teams stayed calm and communicated effectively.

Thinking flexibly and grabbing other materials to help as visual aids was also successful.

Eventually, our persistence paid off.

One team persisted for half an hour to solve the puzzle! What worked in the end was just experimenting and trying random patterns to see things differently.

We listened well to each other and stayed positive, even though it was frustrating.

These problem solving skills will certainly come in handy as we tackle more difficult maths problems.
