'Please have a picture ... Much love, Banksy'

When pupils at Bridge Farm Primary School in Bristol returned from half term this week, they found a new mural decorating one of the walls - apparently painted by Banksy, the elusive street artist whose identity remains a closely guarded secret.

The 4.2m painting of a child with a stick with a stick chasing a burning tyre, signed by Banksy, was seemingly left as a token of appreciation after the school named one of its houses after the artist.

The mural was discovered by the school's caretaker, who also found a note saying:

"Dear Bridge Farm School,

Thanks for your letter and naming a house after me. Please have a picture. If you don't like it feel free to add stuff, I'm sure the teachers won't mind - remember, it's always easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Much love, Banksy."

School head teacher Geoff Mason told the Bristol Post: "I think it went up over the weekend, and completed last night, but we're not entirely sure.

"It was done after we ran a competition to change the house names, and we decided to name them after Bristol legends. We had to include Banksy."

The other three school houses were named Cabot, Brunel and Blackbeard.

"We thought it would be a good idea to write to the PR company and let them know we've run the competition," Mason added.

"I'm sure this is Banksy's work. We had a call from his PR team, and a letter signed by him."

"We are very thrilled about it, and it's great for the school community.

"I'm sure it will inspire the children. The staff had to make quite a few calls this morning to make sure nobody cleaned it off.

"It really is amazing."

  1. What might the saying, "It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission" mean? Do you think this is a good message to send to students? Why/Why not?

    1. I think it is a good saying if people don't take it too far. It means it is easier to do something and ask for forgiveness rather than waiting a long time for permission.

    2. I think that the saying, "It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission," means it's easier to do something before you have asked than after you have asked and the person you asked said no. I think this is a terrible message to be sending to students as it will encourage them to snatch, take others property without asking, etc.

    4. It might mean that you should just go ahead with a great idea, without permission, and if the great idea you had is not liked, then you can ask for forgiveness. If it is liked, then you will be thanked and congratulated. People will feel better if they forgive you instead of holding a grudge. It will be a good message to send in some peoples eyes, because it's telling children to get out there and share your ideas with the world. But in other peoples eyes, it might be saying, you can go and spray paint a building whenever you want to. You can go and do anything you think is a good idea. Banksy gets out there, and he shares his artwork with the world. He is to be admired, but if people are not happy with him spray painting a building or something, he can always ask for forgiveness.

    6. Maybe it means it's easier to get forgiveness than permission. But if you take things to far it might be harder to get forgiveness.

    7. I agree with Reuben but I also think that in some cases if you think what you are doing is the right thing then defintaly do it because if it is the wrong thing you won't do it again.

    9. I think it means that its always easier to do something that you needed permission for but just did it and didn't get permission and instead you got forgiven for doing it.Than if you went and got permission you wouldn't have to be forgiven.

    2. I think that the piece of artwork is a token of appreciation to the school for naming one of their houses after them. I think that it symbolizes a child trying to cover up for the bad that they did or the child might have used the saying,"it's easier to get for forgiveness than permission and had done something dangerous.

  3. Does graffiti count as real artwork? Why/Why not? (If your answer is, "it depends," you need to explain what it depends on.)

    1. it depends on what the graffiti is

    2. Some graffiti counts as artwork but then there are scribble graffiti and thats not artwork.

    3. It depends because some graffiti is just words that are inappropriate and some is really cool artwork that teaches you lessons like what Banksy does.

    5. yes i do think it depends because there's of coarse street art ie. murals but there is also things like what banksy does and there is also people making amazing patterns and images with tagging but then there is vandalism tagging what i do not think of as art

    6. Most graffiti is not artwork however what Banksy does is called "street art" and he has lots of meaning behind his work. Rather than some scribble on a wall.

    10. Graffiti usually isn't art work but in the case of Banksy, I think it should be called art work because they have meanings or connects to other things on the walls.

    11. If the graffiti is bad words sprayed onto a wall or something, then that's not art. But if it's an actual meaningful picture, then that's art. Banksy's artwork has meaning behind it, you just have to find what it is.

      Delete
    12. not really because when it's a picture that counts because some of the pictures have meanings behind them for example banksys work always has a meaning behind it, you just to figure out what it might mean. But when its scribbled words on a wall that we call graffiti that doesn't count as artwork.

    13. It depends because some artwork is junk and some is cool and has meaning like banksy

    14. I agree with sorell as well because that graffiti that is inappropriate or looks silly like those big pop up letters is not an art but banksy does really good paintings with a spray can and on a wall!

    15. just saying graffity is done with a spray can and don[e on a wall too

    16. I think that graffiti is only artwork if it has meaning behind it and has pictures in it. Otherwise it's just vandalism.

    17. i think it depends on what kind of graffiti it is if it is like Banksy's paintings that are detailed and thoughtful then it is not cool or OK when it is just your name spray painted on a wall or skate park e.g

    1. I think he has used habit of mind creating and innovating because he is creative in his artwork. Also he uses make it right to make the artwork look right.

    2. i think he uses creating and innovating because he makes his artwork unique and make it right because if he makes a mistake he can't restart or rub it out

    3. By using his imagination and by putting the image on a wall and the way he wants to. Plus it looks better than normal graffiti
      because it looks good.

    9. Stop And Think to decide what art to do, how he would approach it and how to make it age appropriate.

Past Knowledge, applying past knowledge and experience to his painting so that he doesn't mess up.

Being Clear so that people can understand the meaning behind his artwork and his letter.

Make It Right, painting with precision and care so that he doesn't mess up, making the stencils very carefully and making sure that he had everything.

Questions, questioning his own thinking to make sure that it is clear and has a definite meaning clear to everyone and not just him.

Creating And Innovating to create a meaningful way of showing his gratitude to the school and making the artwork.

    10. Make it right because if he mucked up he would not be able to start again and have a go because to do all the street art he would have to be brave enough to try and not get caught.

    1. It depends if we like or have a link to the picture that was put up and where it was put e.g if it was put on our new buildings people may not like it. The younger Students may think that it is OK to draw on walls.

  7. i would just like to put out there that what banksy does is not called graffiti its called street art

  8. Many of Banksy's street art projects are provocative and some people do not agree with the messages they promote. I personally like what he does and that he is always spontaneous. He does what he wants and whatever he can do help in a certain way. In his art he addresses some of the unpleasant things about society and life in general. If he were to come to St Mark's, I think we would be very lucky but I would hope it would be an appropriate mural.
